Cochrane history: Rural students couldn’t make it to Cochrane High School

Last week, we looked back to how cold it was in Cochrane 70 years ago.

This week, another affect of the winter weather that year.  Public library archivist Ardis Proulx-Chedore reads from a Northland Post report on the first meeting of the 1950 high school board.

“The regular report of Principal B.D. Marwick pointed out that the attendance of pupils from rural areas had been excellent until the time that the roads became blocked and attention difficult for some pupils and impossible for others. Particularly affected are half a dozen pupils from North Frederickhouse, who have been coming in by taxi.  But this method of transportation has been ruled out, as the road is not plowed.”

If you want your own trip through Cochrane history, the archive department at the library is open every Friday between 12:00pm
