Cochrane Derby Gurlz recruiting new skaters

The call has gone out for women all around the area who are 18 or older to try out for the Cochrane Derby Gurlz.

The roller derby team’s head coach Tim Chamandy invites anyone interested to come to the Apitisawin gym in the old St. Joseph’s School Monday at 6:30pm.

“We have all the spare gear.  It doesn’t cost them anything.  They can come and try,” says Chamandy.  “We’ll gear them up, show them a little bit, let them skate around.  If they like it, they can come back and try it a few times.  If they don’t, they got to skate for free.”

The Gurlz play tournaments and exhibition games in the summer.

“We’ve played everywhere from Thunder Bay to Windsor,” according to Chamandy.  “We used to have a Northern Ontario all-star team that went out to Calgary.”

The team practices a couple times a week at the gym until it can get into the curling rink. Its home games are at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

You can get more information on the Derby Gurlz Facebook page.
