DSB1 opts out of provincial math test for Grade 9 — for now

Grade 9 English public school students between the Tri-Towns and Hearst will not be writing a provincial math test this coming Monday as scheduled.

Teachers are working to rule, refusing to prepare or supervise the students.

In a statement on Wednesday. education minister Stephen Lecce gave boards the opportunity to opt out.  District School Board Ontario North East director Lesleigh Dye says that’s the option her board chose.

“It really is almost impossible for us to administer the assessment without the support of our teachers in terms of effectively supervising our students,” she states.

Dye says she’s glad to have heard from the education ministry.

“I appreciate being able to make those decisions, knowing what their recommendation is or their direction and then in a school board, having the flexibility.”

Dye won’t commit to carrying out the testing in June, saying that’s a long way away.
