Once their Boxing Day vacation draw is behind them, fundraisers for a new long term care home in Iroquois Falls head for the curling rink.
Their fourth annual fun bonspiel is set for January 24th to 26th.
Fundraising co-chair Gilles Forget says the event pulls in $6,000 or $6,500 a year.
“We’re hoping to get 24 teams and it’s open to the public,” he explains. “It’s six-end games that we’re playing and it could be mixed because it’s just a fun tournament.”
No curling experience is necessary. The winning rink gets $1,000. Second place gets $500 and third gets $250.
Forget says there’s musical entertainment Saturday night, and a silent auction.
“Businesses have been very generous in donating prizes. Usually we raise about $2,500 at the silent auction. That’s all in part with the $6,500 that we generate at the curling bonspiel.”
The group of fundraisers usually brings in about $100,000 a year. They’ll eventually have to hit $4-million as the community’s share of the construction cost of a facility to replace South Centennial Manor.
