One-day teachers strike underway

“No ifs, no buts, no education cuts. No ifs, no buts, no education cuts.” – Teachers and support staff  on a picket line

Members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation are on the picket line today, a one-day strike to back contract demands with the province.

J.P. Desilets is OSSTF district president covering the area from Moosonee to Hearst to New Liskeard.  Speaking on the TH&VS picket line this morning, he couldn’t confirm at least one report that the job action might spread beyond today.

“We’re ready to arrive at a fair deal,” he remarked. “And so the best of my knowledge, it’s today only and well see what tomorrow brings.”

Desilets reiterates that the two major issues are class sizes and government-imposed e-learning without consultation.

He says his members regret collateral damage on elementary students and their parents.  Classes for them are cancelled today, making those families collateral damage.

“It does, but unfortunately sometimes things come to a head and this is the kind of move that we need to make.”
