Daylight Savings Time can be dangerous, says lawyer

The incidence of traffic accidents increases by about 8 percent, the day after Daylight Savings Time comes into effect. As Ryan Murray, personal injury lawyer with Oatley Vigmond explains, this is due to inadequate sleep.

Murray says a study in the New England Journal of Medicine notes an 8 percent increase in the number of traffic accidents the Monday after the time change.

The loss of just one hour of sleep can have a jet lag effect, reducing your attention span at the wheel. The affects can last up to five days after the time change.

Remain alert, be aware of other motorists who may not be paying attention, and practice defensive driving techniques to keep safe on the road.
