You’re entitled to time to go to the federal election polls

In next Monday’s and every federal election, a qualified voter is entitled to time to get to the polls.

Timmins employment lawyer Carly Stringer says the Canada Elections Act dictates that if need be, your employer has to provide you three consecutive hours.

“It really only gets triggered where the employee has a schedule that wouldn’t give them a three consecutive hour block during which they could go to the polls,” she outlines.

For us, the polls are open for 12 hours, beginning at 9:30 in the morning.

If your boss does anything to violate your right to vote, Stringer says he or she could face a fine or even jail time.
