Duathlon planned for Saturday at Nellie Lake, organizers want to form club

The water in Nellie Lake is a tad chilly this time of year, so organizers of an athletic event this coming Saturday have opted for a duathlon instead of a triathlon.

Scott MacDonald organized a triathlon in early August.  Now he has taken on Darcy Cybolsky and Dean Emmanouil as co-organizers.

Emmanouil says instead of swim-bike-run, competitors will run-bike-run.

“They run a shorter run to begin with, then a bike leg and then they finish off with a run at the end,” he explains.

Emmanouil says there’s an option for competitors.

“There’s two different distances we’re offering for this event.  We’re rather new at doing this, so we’re trying to keep it small and the costs down.”

“We have some interest in starting a triathlon club in the area for the 2020 season,” he adds, “and we’re just starting to feel our way into the area to see what we can come up with.  So it’s exciting, because we’re right at the beginning and we’re sort of grass roots and growing.”

Saturday’s entry free is a voluntary donation.  Any profit will go towards establishing the triathlon club and joining the Ontario body for the sport.
