Cochrane Sportsman’s Club sets target to open shooting range

The aim is to have a new shooting range operational just outside Cochrane before hunting season in the fall.

Executive member Dillon Recoskie says it’s a project of the Cochrane Sportsman’s Club.

“We’re looking to put together a rifle range as well as a trap range for clay shooting,” he tells My Cochrane Now Dot Com.

The rifle range will allow hunters to site in their rifles before going big game hunting, while the trap range gives you practice with shooting at moving targets for waterfowl season.

Recoskie says the range will be a spring-to-fall operation.

“We won’t have it open during the winter.  Currently, the permit the government is issuing us is not for winter use.”

Once a contractor moves a couple berms and a firearms officer gives the green light, it will be open.

Recoskie says the Sportsman’s clubhouse is already on the property, on Rheaume Esker Road, also known as Shier’s Limits.

“We’ve actually purchased a large C-can that’s been converted into a building and we’re going to be also adding a porch extension onto that and that’ll become our clubhouse as well as the range building.”

The clubhouse can be used year-round.
