Despite doing everything right to prevent it, a bear came to visit

A man who lives on Croatia Avenue in Schumacher – right next to the bush – did everything right to keep bears away.  Yet Tuesday morning, there was strong evidence that a bear had broken his garage door, got into the garbage, and let’s just say left a souvenir in the driveway.

Natural resources ministry outreach specialist Karen Passmore confirms that the incident was reported to the Bear Wise line.  She says bears have an extremely keen sense of smell.

“In cases like this,” she says, “what we recommend doing is placing some sort of strong disinfectant around the garbage, on the garbage lid, in the garbage and then at the entrance of the garage, and that will help deter a bear from smelling any garbage.”

“If a bear poses an immediate threat to public safety,” Passmore continues, “ 9-1-1 or your local police is always your first call.  At the request of the police, MNRF will respond to emergency situations.”
