Former Abitibi townsite hit by second house fire in four weeks

With files from Jesse Cybolsky, The Enterprise

Fire has badly damaged a house in the former Abitibi townsite in Iroquois Falls.

It’s the second time that a house in that area has caught fire in the last four weeks.

This time, it was at 122 Buckingham Avenue – a single-family home.  The alarm went in just before noon yesterday (Thursday) and volunteer firefighters were on the scene within six minutes.  The whole front of the house was in flames.

It’s the home of Shawn and Colleen Sweeney.  Last night, Mrs. Sweeney told The Enterprise newspaper that they are insured.   They are staying with a family friend and will be looking to rent a house or apartment for a few months.

Only two of their four cats were accounted for as of last night.

On May 10th, fire a couple blocks away on Anson Drive badly damaged both sides of a duplex.

No people were hurt in either incident.
