In yesterday’s provincial budget, finance minister Vic Fedeli said the government is still “looking into” returning passenger rail service to the Northeast.

Timiskaming-Cochrane NDP MPP John Vanthof notes, however, that the budget cuts millions of dollars from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines – which would provide the funding.

“This whole budget is focused in my opinion on transportation issues in Toronto and they have in a lot of ways ignored the rest of Ontario,” says Vanthof.

He adds that he has no issue with the billions being poured into public transit in Toronto.

“But we also are part of this province.  We also actually provide big incomes to the province of Ontario and rightfully, we should have equal services.”

Vanthof vows to keep pushing until the North gets adequate transportation services.
