Telemedicine service to ease doctor shortage in Iroquois Falls

A telemedicine service targeting “orphaned patients” – anyone without a family doctor – has begun operating in Iroquois Falls.

Good Doctors has sites across Ontario, including one in Cochrane.

Care clinic manager Erin Allin says in Iroquois Falls, patients go to Family Care Pharmacy on Main St. to see a doctor on an i-pad.

“Patients can call and book an appointment for an acute concern,” says Allin. “We basically see things such as minor infections, prescription refills, appointments to schedule referrals if they need to see a specialist.  We can order diagnostic testing, labs and more.”

OHIP covers the same services you get in a doctor’s office.  Allin says one aim is to cut the number of ER visits and waits for those orphaned patients.

Good Doctors has been in Cochrane for almost a year.  Allin says it has seen more than 1,000 patients, and the community response has been excellent.

“The hospital works very well with us in assisting us for diagnostic purposes.  And the pharmacy owners there are just excellent.  They’re lovely people to work with.”
