There’s no guarantee that the ice will be good, but you can still skate on the outdoor rink at Cochrane’s Tim Horton Event Centre.

Community services director Jason Boyer says the high temperatures and humidity, rain and even the sun when it shines have degraded the ice quality.  It’s rutted, gouged and slushy.

“We’re getting cold enough at night (it) brings the temperature of the ice down a little bit,” Boyer notes, “so that’s helping us, still having the cool nights.”

Water sitting on top of the ice makes it slushy, says Boyer. “When people are on it and the ice is that soft, we get bigger ruts in the ice and bigger gouges.”

Still, the rink has not yet closed.
