The unofficial rallying cry for this year’s Tom Saul Memorial Vintage Snowmobile Ride is “ten for ten”.
The Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders are staging their tenth annual ride on March 2nd, hoping to raise $10,000 for cancer care at Lady Minto Hospital.
Sledders from all around the North, as well as Southern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec are expected in Cochrane for the event.
Tom Saul was a founding member of the club and participated in the first ride. He died a short time later, ending a 13-year battle with cancer.
“It’s actually made a difference,” executive member Dan Girard says of the money raised over the years. “Two years ago, they were able to buy a special chair for patients and our mandate has always been care and comfort of patients while taking chemo treatments.”

This year’s ride starts at ten o’clock from the Polar Bear Habitat. The 45-kilometre trip takes participants to the Abitibi Campground for hot dogs, coffee and hot chocolate before heading back. That’s followed by a barbecue dinner and a social evening at the curling club.
“A hundred percent of the money that we collect goes directly to the hospital,” Girard reiterates. “Last year, it was 93-hundred and we’re hoping ten (thousand) for ten, because after all, it’s our tenth year.”
