144 CLOSURE EXTENDS BEYOND 24 HRS. *UPDATE: NOW OPEN*

UPDATE:  At 8:30pm Thurs., Feb. 14, OPP announced that Highway 144 has reopened.

The most-travelled road between our area and Sudbury remains closed, more than a full day after a truck carrying propane slid off the road and tipped over.

From the scene about 30 kilometres from 101, yesterday afternoon, OPP Const. Michelle Simard updates the situation.

“The highway remains closed at this time,” she says. “The crane is there now, trying to remove the tractor-trailer from the ditch.  So we can expect some more delays.”

Simard cannot estimate how long that will take.

“For public safety and the safety of all the motorists that’ll be travelling the 144, we felt it would be safer if we closed the highway.”

The truck was the only vehicle involved.  The driver was not hurt.
