ACT Challenging Timmins To Go Brown Tomorrow

Tomorrow you can show your support for the children who need it most.

According to Executive Director of Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins Jennifer Vachon, World Children’s Day on Tuesday will be a chance for the city to show its generosity through the Brown Bag Challenge.

Vachon says ACT has joined by challenging workplaces in Timmins to brown-bag their lunches tomorrow and pool together the money that could have been spent, and instead donate to United Way.

She says United Way is able to then provide further funding for programs such as the Good Food Box, Community Gardens and Collective Cooking Programs.

Vachon says this is important considering a study this summer done by the ACT outlined that 44 per cent of people using emergency food services were between the age of zero to 12.

She says through their brown-bag challenge they hope they can further awareness about the importance of these programs.

“One of the things is really increasing awareness about the programs that do exist in Timmins, that do work towards fulfilling children’s rights. So World Children’s Day is about making sure that children’s rights are met everyday and one of those rights is access to good, healthy food.”

Vachon says they hope to use a day like tomorrow to further the awareness and knowledge of the city on this issue.

“Whether its making those connections or learning more about United Way and how they are supporting programs in our community and giving those funds to United Way so these programs continue to be able to be funded, if someone takes away any part of that’s beautiful and really what we are looking for.”

In order to make your workplace a part of the challenge, ACT asks that you register your company or group so that you can be provided with a Brown Bag Challenge package.

The Brown Bag Challenge in support of United Way North East Ontario goes tomorrow.
