Small Village Saying Goodbye To Longtime Parish

A small village just north of Cochrane is losing its place of worship.

The village of Genier, home to Notre Dame des Oliviers Parish, has announced that this Sunday will be the final mass to take place at the church.

The Catholic church has served the community for many decades including its continued existence despite a devastating fire which took place 20 years ago.

Despite the flames, the church was completely rebuilt.

However, time has taken its toll on the facility, as well as the community and the parish says attendance at weekly mass has greatly diminished.

Due to this, the diocese has recently determined that keeping the building open would no longer be possible.

The village’s members now must travel to Cochrane in order to find the nearest church.
