Police Release Tips for Crime Prevention Week

Crime prevention week is underway and police are sending out a few safety tips.

The Timmins Police Service says this week-long campaign is aimed at keeping you safe, as well as reducing crime in the community.

TPS says there are some things that you can do to help including:

1) Call 911 if you witness a crime in progress or a possible crime in progress or a dangerous situation
2) Anonymously contact Crime Stoppers “See Something? Hear Something? Know Something? Contact Crime Stoppers” at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or by texting “Tip 201” with your message to 274637 (crimes)
3) Lock It OR Lose It! Secure your vehicles & home
4) Increase street visibility around your house so that neighbors and others can see if someone is in your yard or trying your door locks
5) If your home looks occupied, your risk of burglary decreases, take all necessary steps to lessen enticement for criminals
6) Thieves prefer residents not to be home, so leave lights on, get your mail collected, and take other steps to make it look like someone is home
7) Thieves like easy pickings, so target harden your home with outside lighting, good locks, alarms, and other home protection devices
8) Reach out, volunteer, and participate in your community so that you know who belongs in your neighborhood
9) When you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to call police – promptness promotes prevention
10) Anticipate likely targets of crime, be observant in your neighborhood, report anything suspicious in nature: Crime prevention does not occur randomly, it is the result of planning and effort

Police say the goal is to have you help the police prevent crime.
