Northern College Talks Marijuana on Campus

Northern College is reviewing some of its policies because of the marijuana legalization.
Some post-secondary institutions across the country are completely banning the use of cannabis on campus. The school says right now the impact of this legislation at Northern College is still a little bit of wait and see.

Vice President of Academic and Student Success Audrey Penner says the school feels that there are policies already in place that address many of the situations that would arise out of cannabis use on campus within the code of conduct and smoking policy. “But we are going to be carefully monitoring the situation. We do realize that there may be at the front end of this new legislation unusual and atypical activities and once people get used to legalized cannabis, things should settle down.”

Penner says students on campus and living in residence will be able to smoke medical cannabis on campus. “We will have designated smoking areas similar to what we have for smoking now. The students will not be allowed to actually grow. For example, you can have a marijuana plant in your home but the residences are not considered their home. So that will be stipulated differently.”

Penner says the college is committed to ensuring everyone is fit for work and fit for learning.
