A Northern Ontario man won big at this year’s Northern Ontario Business Awards.

This award night recognizes business success and development in 10 categories including:

  • Company of the Year (1 to 15 employees, 16 to 50 employees and 51+ employees)
  • Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Young Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Entrepreneurial Community
  • First Nations Business Award of Excellence
  • Innovation
  • Export
  • Judges’ Choice
  • An annual $3,000 Union Gas Essay Scholarship for a northern student

This is the 32nd year the NOBA’s has handed out awards to the northern businesses that are helping the region’s economy grow. A panel of judges is asked to judge businesses on all aspects of business performance, from customer service and community involvement to human resource management and future planning.

This year Daniel Brunet from DJB Mining Products and Services took home the Entrepreneur of the Year award. The NOBA’s say Brunet has earned the respect and loyalty from his clients by putting quality, customer service and safety first. A press release from the award organizers says “Over the last eight years, Brunet has grown DJB Mining Products and Services from a one-man enterprise, operating out of a 1,400-foot trailer, to a bustling service and supply company that employs more than 30 people and takes up 27,000 square feet of shop space.DJB specializes in portable align boring, welding and bucket fabrication, supplying products and services to both underground and surface projects at mine sites across northeastern Ontario.”

Brunet says he couldn’t have done this without his team. “Everyone who I have surrounded myself with over the years have made this a success. It definitely feels good to be recognized as a team for sure.”

He says now that the award night is over, it’s time to go back to work. “We are always looking for continuously looking for improvement on our day-to-day and finetuning operations to become more profitable and develop.”

Brunet says he encourages young people to get into the trades because there is always work to be done.
