Youth are Invited to the Stratosphere Balloon Base

Your kids have the chance to see the Timmins Stratosphere Balloon Base.

Science Timmins is teaming up with the Canadian and French Space Agencies to give local youth the opportunity to see the centre, meet the scientists and set off their own mini stratosphere balloons. The two agencies are back in Timmins sending massive balloons with experiments into the sky to collect data for a variety of research projects.

Science Timmins President and CEO Antoine Garwah says Science Timmins will be taking a group of youth to the centre for an Open house. Garwah says it’s important to expose youth to different opportunities in the world of science.

Garwah says the youth will be able to see the laboratories, meteorology room, control panel and discuss job opportunities with people working in the field.

He says this open house will also act as the brainstorming ground for a new project at Science Timmins. He says next summer the centre will be able to send its own experiment up with one of the giant balloons. Garwah says Science Timmins wants this project to come from the youth. He adds that it can be as simple as sending up a camera to take pictures, or something to collect data for whatever they want to learn about. He says youth are much more creative than he is.

The open house will take place on August 23rd from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. It will be free and offered to youth aged 12 to 17. Garwah says there are only 30 spots and it’s on a first come first serve basis. Anyone interested can contact Science Timmins to register. The deadline to sign up is this Friday.
