Stratospheric Balloons are Launching in Northern Ontario

Massive balloons are being set into the Northern Ontario sky.

The Canadian and French Space Agencies are setting data experiments into the stratosphere from the Timmins Airport. The science agencies teamed up four years ago in Timmins for a series of experiments and are back for about five weeks.

The biggest balloon being released in Timmins are 800-thousand cubic metres and as tall as the Eiffel Tower.

Friday night was the first launch for this year’s experiment series. The space agencies are flying technological payloads into the stratosphere to collect a variety of data. The data collected from the atmosphere will be used for a series of university and research department projects. No scientists were available for comment on what projects are currently being worked on.

Airport Manager Dave Dayment says when the scientists were in Timmins four years ago they were testing a telescope that they were hoping could be used on the international space station.
