The mining industry could need about 3,000 more workers by 2027.
The Far Northeast Training Board has released its new mining sector hiring and employment forecast. It says the board surveyed several mines and mining suppliers to gauge what the current workforce looks like and what it could look like in the future.  Executive Director Julie Joncas says the 3,000 jobs needed will be because of anticipated retirement and mine expansions.
Joncas says the survey shows which jobs could see a decrease in workers. She says industrial mechanics may see a shortfall of 450 workers, underground production and development miners may lose 400 people and truck drivers may lose 350 by 2027 all due to retirements. She says this information has been handed to local colleges so they can bring more programs to potential students. She says this information is great for schools to see what education is in demand so graduates can get jobs as soon as possible.
Joncas says some information that came back was a little shocking, including how many workers come from outside the region.
She says this is encouraging because it shows a movable and dedicated workforce.
Joncas now that the information is out there, we can work on filling the gabs to ensure all the upcoming jobs get filled.Â
