Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says the Liberal’s carbon tax is nothing more than a tax grab and adds we don’t know where the money goes.
The New Democrat says a better model is cap and trade and says this approach works as history shows in Northern Ontario.
Vanthof says years ago Inco was a major contributor to acid rain which affected growth in the region.
“But the province put in a cap and trade model and it worked,” Vanthof said.
He says the program helped control emissions from the Sudbury smelter and in recent years the lakes have been coming back.
Vanthof says it’s doubtful the Liberals’ carbon tax will help the environment and will produce a negative consequence.
On top of that he adds the public really doesn’t know where money collected under cap and trade goes.
“Unless you have really strong rules that the money collected actually goes to prevent the problem and doesn’t become a tax grab, it’s not going to help the environment,” Vanthof said.
“It will only cost people more money.”
