The Green Party candidate in Timiskaming-Cochrane says people have had a negative impact on the environment.
She says the impacts take in things like the oceans which have affected marine life.
Other negative consequences have been oil pipeline spills which have had an effect on human, plant and wildlife.
Casey Laonde says that’s why her party supports a cap and trade system where pollution is taxed at the source and you give people a reason to produce less.
She says the money collected under cap and trade is re-distributed to taxpayers much in the same way that people now get a GST cheque.
Lalonde believes progress has been made with climate change and adds it’s not wise to stop because technology keeps improving.
“You look at the first automobiles that came out to what we drive now and there’s been a linear progression,” Lalonde said.
“So going to a carbon tax system is part of that. It’s part of the gradual improvement to where we become more efficient.”
Lalonde says under a cap and trade system, there are limits on the amount of emissions that are produced.
