Victor Mine Focuses on Employees During Closure

People and the environment are the main focus in closing the Victor Mine.

De Beers Canada announced in November that it will be closing the diamond mine located near Attawapiskat in February 2019. The mine opened in 2008 and is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this July.

Head of External and Corporate Affairs Tom Ormsby says as the mine is going through the closing process, it’s focus is on the helping the over 500 current employees.

Ormsby says the mine is still fully operational until February. He says because of this the layoff process will be in stages. He says De Beers is doing the best it can to streamline the notice process so all employees have enough time to make any career decisions.

Ormsby keeping an open communication seems to be helping because production and safety numbers are still very high. He says this way the workers can keep their minds on the work instead of worrying.

He adds that the environmental reclamation work has been underway is stages over the past five years. Ormsby says says over 200,000 tree saplings grown locally have been planted near the mine site thanks to the seed collection program with high school and college students. He says the goals is to make the mine site as close to its original state as possible.
