Northern College Asks MPP Candidates to Make Apprenticeship Programs a Priority

Colleges are looking to MPP candidates for some changes for apprenticeship programs.

Northern College says it is asking candidates to help streamline the application process for apprenticeship courses.Executive Director of Community, Business Development and Employment Services at Northern Christine Heavens says the province already has a province-wide college application service that could be utilized expanded include apprenticeship applications.

Heavens says one of the biggest roadblocks in getting students to apply for apprenticeship programs is getting the work experience.

Heavens says having all the information and applications in one spot will get more people interested and filling jobs within the region. She says that by next year alone in the mining sector there is a need for over 75 more millwrights. She says this demand will grow over the years. She says the colleges are looking for the MPP candidates to make this a priority moving forward.
