MNRF says Dead Fish on Shorelines are Normal

Dead fish are showing up on lake shorelines as the ice continues to melt.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says there is no reason to be alarmed because this is normal. Outreach Specialist Karen Passmore says this is typically called winterkill and happens quite often in small bodies of water with vegetation.

Passmore says winterkill doesn’t just affect the fish population.

She says landowners will typically clean up the fish.
