Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof Says NDP Government Would Bring Back Northlander

Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof says the Ontario Liberals have made it very clear, they don’t care about Northern Ontario.

Vanthof made the comment during an event to unveil the NDP platform leading up to the June 7th election.

Vanthof says the Premier has dismissed the NDP proposal to bring back the Northlander saying there’s no business case for it.

That proposal calls for capital expenses of $100-million spent over four years.

Vanthof says the proposal is a sound one and says the Premier has never really considered the possibilities of rail.

“We’ve talked to the ONTC,” said Vanthof.

“There are lots of opportunities that have never been explored before.  There’s a lot of potential.”

Vanthof says when the Premier says there’s no business case for the Northlander, she fails to mention there’s also no business case for rail transportation in Southern Ontario, yet rail infrastructure in the south sees regular subsidies.

Vanthof says once the rail passenger cars are in place, the NDP would calculate want kind of operating budget the revitalized Northlander would need.
