Northern Communities Warned Of Increased Online Retail

A recent meeting of Northern Ontario communities aimed focus at the impact of online retailing to small business.

In Iroquois Falls this past Friday the Northeastern Ontario Municipal Association met to discuss how a rise in online sales could affect the northern marketplace for small or family business.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation Regional Manager Mary Dawson-Cole spoke at the meeting saying in 2020 they are planning an update to their system for setting property values in Ontario.

Dawson-Cole says the north has not fallen as far as the south regarding online sales as of yet, but the customer loyalty won’t last forever.

She says within a few years the local shops that have been the heartbeat of small communities up north will face an immense competition from online retail.
