The OPP wants to remind all snowmobilers to be driving safe this winter.

James Bay Detachment Media Officer Stephanie Belec says excessive speed and losing control accounts for nearly half of the deaths last year from snowmobile incidents.

Belec says also over 70 per cent of the fatal incidents occurred on a weekend, with half occurring on what was thought to be frozen waterways.

She says to avoid this outcome, it is a must you remember no waterway is ever 100 per cent safe.

Belec says last year alone was the worst in terms of fatalities in the past decade.

The OPP is wishing the community a safe and happy riding season.
