NDP MPP Says Sudbury Bribery Trial End Result Disappointing

An extremely rare directed verdict from a judge has dismissed charges in the Sudbury by-election trial.

Former Liberal Party CEO Pat Sorbara and Sudbury businessman Gerry Lougheed had been charged with bribing a would-be Liberal candidate Andrew Olivier to step aside so NDP MP Glenn Thibeault could defect to run for the Liberals.

On Tuesday afternoon in a Sudbury courtroom, the judge came to the ruling that there was simply not enough evidence in order to continue.

Following the verdict, NDP MPP for Timmins-James Bay Gilles Bisson says there is no easy way to comfort Ontarians with the fact that Liberal officials have beaten bribery charges.

Bisson says the entire process has disturbed the citizens of the province, and he says Ontarians should feel deeply let down by Premier Kathleen Wynne.

He says through the trial everyone received a small glimpse into the inner workings of a Liberal party obsessed with promoting itself, not the people.
