NDP MPP Says New Ridings Are Bitter Sweet

It’s official, two new provincial ridings are coming to the Northern Ontario region.

The province has passed the Representation Statute Law Amendment Act to have a total of four ridings in the region, bringing more representation to Queen’s Park.

Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson says this is bitter sweet because it’s great to have more representation, but it was supposed to be two Indigenous voices which isn’t happening.

Bisson says the province wants to re-visit this act in the spring to give First Nations a voice.

The province says the changes follow the recommendations of the independent Far North Electoral Boundaries Commission, which was created to provide advice to improve electoral representation in the north.
