Ontario College Faculty to Go on Strike Monday

Faculty members at all 24 colleges in Ontario, including College Boreal and Northern College, will be going on strike tomorrow morning.

The College Employer Council, which bargains for the college faculty, says the Ontario Public Service Employees Union rejected its latest contract proposal. Employer council spokesperson Sonia Del Missier says management was offering terms that were as good or better than recent settlements with teachers and college support staff.

The union offered a newer offer Saturday night that called for job security improvement and for faculty to have a stronger voice in academic decision making.

The employer council complained earlier last week that union demands for staffing ratios and wage increases would add more than $1 billion in costs over three years.

The strike involves more than 12,000 professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians and affects over 500,000 students across the province.
