Study To Begin Whether Miners Inhaling Aluminum Dust Developed Neurological Diseases

It could be a windfall for former Northern Ontario gold and uranium miners or their survivors.   The Timmins Daily Press says the province will study if these miners came down with neurological diseases as a result of inhaling aluminum dust.  Inhaling aluminum was a common practice for decades because it was thought to protect a miner’s lungs while underground.  About 10,000 miners inhaled the dust from 1943 to 1980.  The practice was stopped when the method became doubtful.  Janice Martell of Elliot Lake has argued for years that the dust causes things like Parkinson’s which her late father developed after leaving the mines.   Martell told The Daily Press she’s grateful the issue will now be studied.
