The OPP is alerting the local community of the importance of being aware when it comes to preventing fraud. Police are reminding Cochrane and Iroquois Falls residents that the most typical type of identity theft includes the exchange of government documents such as drivers’ licences and health cards. Criminals can use these documents to access your bank accounts, email accounts, credit cards and other vulnerable areas.
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre in 2016 alone, there were nearly 9,500 complaints of identity theft in Canada and over $12 million in financial losses. Police are asking that you be careful to protect your identity by being wary of emails or phone calls asking for personal information. Also, keep an eye on your bank and credit card statements, alerting your bank of any suspicious activity.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of identity theft or identity fraud you are asked to contact your local police or Crime Stoppers.
