(NHL) The Toronto Maple Leafs thumped the Winnipeg Jets 7-2 last night in the season opener. Auston Matthews and James van Riemsdyk each had three points and Patrick Marleau scored twice in his Leaf debut. In other action Connor McDavid scored all 3 goals as the Oilers shut out Calgary 3-0, Philadelphia beat San Jose 5-3 and St Louis edged Pittsburgh 5-4 in overtime.
(MLB) The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 11-8 in the National League wild-card game last night. The Diamondbacks became the first team with four triples in a post-season game since the Boston Americans hit five during the first World Series back in 1903. Arizona now moves on to face the LA Dodgers.
