Power Generation Station Opens Ahead Of Schedule Near Smooth Rock Falls

Northern Ontario’s newest power source has opened near Smooth Rock Falls.

The official opening of the Peter Sutherland Senior Generating Station took place this past Thursday.

The location for the facility is on the Abitibi River, making it roughly 40 minutes north of Smooth Rock Falls.

Ontario Power Generation and Coral Rapids Power partnered to build the station and completed it both ahead of time and under budget, for roughly $300 million.

President of OPG Jeff Lyash says the fact the project remained within their budget while progressing so quickly was impressive for a new 28-megawatt facility.

The station will be run remotely by the OPG’s North Eastern operations control facility in Timmins and any maintenance work will be completed by technicians in the OPG’s nearby Abitibi Canyon operations.
