A nearby first nations community is being evacuated into Kapuskasing due to ongoing forest fires.
Forest fires that began prior to this past weekend near the Nibinamik First Nation community have forced people from their homes due to the potential health and safety risks.
Nibinamik First Nation declared a state of emergency on Saturday, August 12th due to the fires, and since Kapuskasing CAO Guylain Baril says evacuation flights into Kapuskasing have been taking place.
Baril says the current timeline for their stay is unknown.
He says roughly 270 evacuees will remain in Kapuskasing with meals and emergency supplies to be provided at the Civic Centre Auditorium.
Currently, the ministry of natural resources and forestry is coordinating flight schedules and planning is underway to locate additional host communities for the remaining evacuees.
