The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is suggesting changes to rail track inspections after the 2015 CN derailment in Gogama.

Thirty-nine cars with crude oil came off the track spilling 2.6 million liters of fuel which contaminated a nearby river and also caught fire.

The TSB found that three days before the derailment, a section of damaged track had been repaired.

However, an internal defect in the rail was missed.

That, combined with other factors later, triggered the derailment.

The TSB is recommending that Transport Canada add information rail companies gather from track inspections to its own data.

The TSB believes that with this added data, future track inspections by Transport Canada will be more effective at detecting defects.
