Court Ruling Disappoints Regional Chief

Ontario’s Regional Chief says legislative changes are needed to ensure better protection of Aboriginal and Treaty rights.

Isadore Day was reacting to a court decision where Enbridge can reverse the flow of an oil pipeline that runs through the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. In announcing its decision, the Supreme Court of Canada said the Crown satisfied its duty to consult with the First Nation. However Day says legislation overseeing issues like this where there’s a duty to consult has not been properly updated.

Day says he and other First Nation leaders will continue to stand by the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation.
